List of Diet Programs

Every January, after the succession of food holidays from October through December, millions of people who have overindulged the previous year passionately vow to go on a diet. With a plethora of diets available, it should be easy to pick one that helps you meet your weight loss goals. Unfortunately, losing weight is easier than maintaining weight loss for the 66 percent of overweight and obese Americans, according to the Cleveland Clinic. When you need to lose weight, your diet plan should help you develop eating habits that fit a healthy lifestyle and have reliable support from nutrition science.

Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet suggests that you will lose weight by boosting your metabolism with an eating plan that allows unlimited consumption of proteins. It features a daily limit of 60 g of carbohydrates. This diet has no restrictions on fat intake but does not permit alcohol or caffeine. People who follow the diet lose weight because the diet's lack of carbohydrates forces the body to burn body fat or muscle for fuel.

Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup diet requires that you eat copious amounts of a soup that contains cabbage with other vegetables for seven days, followed by two days of unlimited consumption of chicken and fish. If you have not reached your target weight by the end of the diet, you start consuming the cabbage soup again. This diet can produce rapid weight loss, but it contains little protein and carbohydrates.

Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is an eating plan that may help you lose weight, lower blood sugar and reduce your risk of heart disease. It features high-fiber foods, vegetables, low-fat dairy and unsaturated fats, many containing omega 3 fatty acids. It limits proteins from red meats, carbohydrates, eggs, butter and most sweets. This diet includes moderate consumption of alcohol, primarily red wine with dinner.

Weight Watcher's Diet
The Weight Watcher's diet uses points assigned according to a formula that combines your current weight, level of activity daily and your age. You do not need to count calories, eliminate carbohydrates or any of your favorite foods, including fats, proteins and empty calories like sugar and alcohol. To reach your targeted weight, your consumption of foods from all food groups must be below the maximum total daily points recommended for you.

Blood Type Diet
The Blood Type diet uses a list of foods that correlate to your blood type. It focuses on and eliminates specific foods for each of the four human blood types. Washington University notes that Peter D'Adamo---the diet's creator---bases the food lists for this diet on his theory that blood types arose from humanity's historical development. His research to prove the theory behind this diet concept has no support from any reliable scientific studies or peer reviews.
According to this diet plan, blood type A resulted from agrarian lifestyles; this group should eat a vegetarian diet. If your blood type is B, from nomadic societies, fish and red meat are your staples. Hunter-gatherers---type O---also eat meat, butter and fewer carbohydrates. Those in blood type AB should combine the foods from both groups. The book "Eat Right 4 Your Type" provides specific food suggestions for this diet.

10 Habits That Make You Fat

If losing weight were easy, no one would be overweight. Unfortunately, the facts are indisputable: A chili-cheese omelet is more delicious than an egg-white omelet, French fries taste better than side salads and chicken is yummier when battered and fried.

On the other hand, being a healthy weight feels better than being overweight. And a healthy weight is a lot easier to accomplish when the right choices become second nature. In other words, weight-loss goals are more achievable when healthy choices turn into healthy habits.

HABIT 1: Poor Preparation

Boy Scouts and healthy eaters have the same motto: Be prepared. Having a refrigerator and pantry stocked with the right foods -- lean proteins, whole-grain carbohydrates, fruits, nonstarchy vegetables and healthy fats -- means you'll be prepared to eat what you should when you should. Similarly, entering a restaurant armed with a plan will keep you on the right track when dining out.

Preparation also means knowing your cravings and having healthy alternatives on hand to curb them, says Molly Kimball, a nutrition writer and registered dietitian in New Orleans. If sweets are your weakness, for example, keep fresh fruits or single-serve, sugar-free pudding cups on hand to satisfy your sweet tooth without taking a huge caloric hit.

HABIT 2: Not Drinking Enough Water

Drinking the right amount of water promotes overall health, from skin, bones and joints to the digestive system, memory and brain function. But Kimball says proper hydration can also help when you're concerned about weight.

"Fatigue is one of the first signs of mild dehydration," Kimball said. "A lot of people misinterpret that sluggish feeling as hunger, and they eat to boost energy."

The impact of hydration on weight loss, however, goes beyond the prevention of misinterpreted body messages. A study published in the November 2008 issue of "Obesity" showed a definite association between increased water intake and increased weight loss. In another study, its results presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society, researchers from Virginia Tech confirmed that dieters who drink two 8-oz. glasses of water before their three daily meals lose about 5 lbs. more than dieters who do not drink pre-meal water.

So how much water is the right amount? Kimball says the old "64 oz. a day" rule is too one-size-fits-all; different bodies need different amounts of water. She says a good guideline is to divide your weight in half and drink that number of ounces per day. So a 180-lb. person would shoot for 90 oz.

HABIT 3: Not Getting Enough Protein

People who get too much of their daily caloric intake from carbs are going to have a hard time losing weight. Kimball recommends including a source of protein with every meal. The body uses twice as much energy processing protein as it does carbohydrates and fat, meaning when you eat protein, your body actually burns more calories digesting it.

Low-fat meats such as skinless chicken, pork tenderloin, lean cuts of beef and ground turkey and seafood are excellent sources of protein. Kimball says you can also sneak protein into your meals in the form of eggs, cheese, peanut butter, nuts, Greek yogurt, or low-sugar protein bars and powders.
HABIT 4: Consuming Too Many Liquid Calories

Calories that enter your body in liquid form are inefficient calories. They count against your daily total, but they don't make you feel full. Kimball advises against drinking your calories.

"No fruit juice, soft drinks or sports drinks," Kimball said.

Instead, drink water, tea or coffee without sugar. If you must have sweetened drinks, Kimball has no problem with sugar-free soft drinks or low-calorie powdered flavored beverages.

Liquid calories often come in the form of alcoholic beverages, and those should be limited, too. If you can't do without, Kimball recommends sticking with wine, light beer, or liquor with a noncaloric mixer like water, club soda or diet soda. Women should limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day, and men should stop at two.
HABIT 5: Not Getting Enough Zzz's

You don't even need to be conscious to work on losing weight. Getting the right amount of sleep seems to be a major factor in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

A study released in 2006 by researchers at Case Western Reserve University tracked the weight and sleeping habits of 68,000 women over 16 years. The women who reported sleeping five hours or less nightly weighed an average of 5.5 lbs. more than the women who slept seven hours or more at the start of the study.

The reason is hormones, specifically leptin and ghrelin. Separate studies conducted by the University of Chicago and Stanford University suggested that sleep deprivation causes a reduction in leptin levels, while also causing ghrelin levels to rise. High ghrelin stimulates the appetite, while low leptin makes you feel unsatisfied after eating, leaving you hungrier during your waking hours and, likely, heavier.
HABIT 6: Skipping Breakfast

It can be hard to make time for breakfast during the rush to get out the door in the morning, but if you're interested in losing weight or keeping it off, you should make the effort to fit it in. Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, forcing it to begin burning calories.

But many people simply don't have an appetite first thing in the morning. Kimball says that's fine -- just make sure you eat something within the first two hours of waking.

She says the perfect breakfast combines complex carbohydrates with protein and a bit of healthy fat. Try two scrambled eggs with a slice of whole-grain toast, a cup of Greek yogurt with a handful of berries and chopped nuts stirred in, or a bowl of oatmeal topped with berries and a splash of skim milk with two slices of center-cut bacon on the side. If you're usually in a rush in the morning, stock up on low-sugar protein bars and have breakfast during your morning commute.

HABIT 7: Shopping the Center Aisles

A good basic rule to follow at the grocery store is to do most of your shopping near the four walls.

"The perimeter of the grocery store is what you need to be eating," said Nicole Wynne, staff dietitian at Women & Men's Nutrition and Weight Control Centers of Louisiana. "It's where you usually find the fresh produce, the meats and the dairy. In the middle aisles, you find more of the processed foods you want to avoid."

Wynne said there are a few exceptions, namely in the freezer section with its frozen vegetables and no-sugar-added frozen fruits and berries, which are nutritious additions to smoothies, yogurt and oatmeal.

HABIT 8: Poor Record Keeping

You want to lose weight, and you've been trying to maintain a healthy diet, but the pounds are not coming off. The problem may be that you're eating more than you think. A food diary can be an effective solution.

"Write down everything that goes in your mouth," Wynne said.

According to Wynne, the act of recording what you consume in a food diary is effective on multiple levels. First, you get the full picture of your daily caloric intake -- it's impossible to forget the handful of candy-coated chocolates you eat every time you pass your co-worker's candy jar if it's right there in black and white. Knowing you'll have to write it down might make you reconsider that late-night bowl of ice cream. Also, once you've kept your diary for a while, you'll probably begin to notice patterns -- like a caloric uptick every time you have dinner at your uncle's house -- enabling you to make adjustments for particular situations.

How you record your daily food intake is a matter of preference. Some prefer an old-fashion pen and notepad, while others choose to use one of the many food diary applications available online, such as the MyPlate Calorie Tracker at Livestrong.com.
HABIT 9: Not Lifting Weights

You will not achieve your weight-loss goals easily through diet and cardio alone. A regimen that combines weight training and cardiovascular training optimizes the ability to shed pounds.

Studies have demonstrated a significant relationship between resistance training and weight loss. While both weightlifting and cardiovascular exercise burn calories and boost the metabolism, cardio only raises the metabolism during the exercise and for a short time after. Weightlifting, however, increases metabolism during the exercise and for a long time after. This "afterburn" -- the continued burning of calories from lifting weights after the training session has ended -- can last for hours, even days.

During the recuperation period, the muscle metabolism is still burning energy, and that's when it's time to perform cardiovascular activities. Combining low-repetition exercises (weightlifting) with high-repetition cardiovascular exercise will stress muscles in a complementary way to increase the total fat-burning effect.
HABIT 10: Throwing in the Towel

Cut yourself some slack. It's one of the most important things you can do when you're trying to lose weight. Missteps happen. You succumb to a craving and have an unhealthy lunch. Forgive yourself for it and get back to your plan right away.

"If you blow a meal, it is not a free pass to blow the rest of the day," Wynne said.

Those who give up for the rest of the day, week, month or year due to a momentary setback will never achieve lasting weight loss. Mistakes happen, and the weight-loss battle is won and lost by how you respond to those mistakes. The best way to do it, Wynne says, is to forgive yourself for the lapse in willpower and move on at once, immediately resuming your healthy lifestyle.
Healthy Habits for a Healthy Life

If you see yourself in any of these 10 habits that make you fat, the best time to start changing them is right now. For every bad habit, there's a good habit. And the only way to turn healthy choices into healthy habits is repetition. So start shedding your unhealthy habits, and you'll be shedding pounds soon enough.

9 Foods That Help Fight Belly Fat

Black Beans

All legumes are full of protein and fiber -- two well-known appetite crushers. And thanks to their dark color, black beans are also one of the highest in flavonoids of all the beans. And research shows that flavonoids may thwart the storage of excess tummy fat.

Pears
Fresh pears are so low in calories and high in fiber, you could eat one before every meal and still lose weight. But even better, pears are loaded with catechins and flavonols -- two antioxidants that appeared to hinder the storage of belly fat in a 14-year study.

Popcorn
Go ahead. Pop up a bowl. Sans the butter and salt, popcorn is a real gut whittler. Why? Because popcorn is a whole grain -- and a study revealed that people who ate lots of whole grains had smaller middles compared with folks who ate mostly refined grains. So while you're waiting for yours to pop, clear all the white rice, pasta, and bread out of your cupboards

Cold Potatoes

Hate having to pass on the potatoes for the sake of your pants size? Well, you may not have to. Just eat them cold -- as in vinegar potato salad. If you chill potatoes overnight, they form something called resistant starch crystals -- a constituent of fiber that triggers the production of two hunger-halting hormones, according to research. And resistant starch helps the body incinerate more fat for fuel while making less fat available to stash away in fat cells.
Peanuts
Hard to believe that rich-tasting, calorie-packed peanuts could help you lose weight. But they just might. Seems the healthy fats in peanuts are burned more readily than the less-healthy fats found in cookies, chips, and creamy desserts. So make them your snack of choice.

Sunflower Seeds
Toss 'em into soups and salads, mix them into yogurt, or sprinkle them onto sandwiches for nutty crunch. Plus, sunflower seeds (unsalted, please) are high in monounsaturated fat -- a healthful type of fat that appeared to inhibit waist widening in a study of overweight people.
Tea
Seems the white version of this brew may be a veritable fat blaster. When human fat cells were treated with white tea extract in a lab study, the cells absorbed about 70% less fat than the untreated cells did. And those same tea compounds also triggered the breakdown of fat in existing cells.

Apple Cider Vinegar

As a fish condiment and tang-provider for sauces and salad dressings, nothing beats apple cider vinegar. But here's a big bonus: Apple cider vinegar also has a compound called acetic acid, which turbocharges the body's ability to burn fat and simultaneously hinders fat storage.

Safflower Oil
This popular salad dressing ingredient could be a big boon to your belly-flattening efforts, thanks to the omega-6 fatty acid called linoleic acid. It may rev up metabolism. And in a study, just a couple of tablespoons a day appeared to encourage belly fat to take a hike.

An Active Approach
Eating foods that seem to target belly fat is just a starter strategy for getting rid of that gut. You'll see better, faster results if you exercise, too. In fact, just being more active in general helps. In one study of office workers, just standing up more often helped melt 1½ inches from people's waists. It doesn't take much -- just a few extra hours a week of exercise may produce results.

Stress Less
Reducing stress may help with the battle of the bulge, too. Chronic stress boosts your blood levels of cortisol -- the "fight or flight" hormone. And cortisol encourages belly fat in two ways:

It triggers cravings for sugary, high-fat comfort foods.
It signals the body to store more fat in your abdomen.

Zelia Chung Attempted the Morning Banana Diet

Zelia Chung noted that her body retains excess water, thus she will not eat rice nor noodles. She only eats vegetables and meat with her meals. She tries to eat a lot of broccoli, which contains plenty of Vitamins C, K, and A.
Zelia admitted that she has tried the Morning Banana Diet, which took Japan by storm two years ago.  For breakfast, Zelia ate a banana and drank a glass of warm water. “My waist slimmed down because my bowel movements improved. If my face is puffy with excessive fluid retention in the morning, then I will a cup of black coffee quickly. It does help me stay slim, but of course I will not drink it all the time.”
Excerpt from the Sun
Bananas contain pectin, a soluble fiber that can help normalize the digestive tract’s movement and ease constipation. By taking in more fiber, the increase in bowel movements also help remove excessive body waste and weight. Of course treat this diet fad with a grain of salt. You can incorporate bananas into your meals, but eating healthily is about balance of a variety of foods.

More info about the Morning Banana Diet, excerpted from Time. com:

The Morning Banana Diet regime is simple: A banana (or as many as you want) and room temperature water for breakfast; eat anything you like for lunch and dinner (by 8 p.m.). A  three o’clock snack is okay, but no desserts after meals, and you have to go to bed before midnight. Sumiko Watanabe, a pharmacist in Osaka designed this stress-free diet to help increase the metabolism of her husband Hitoshi Watanabe, who had been rather overweight. In due course, Mr. Watanabe lost 37 pounds and introduced the diet on mixi, one of Japan ‘s largest social networking services.

The 3 Fruits That Can Reduce the Risk of Obesity

You may want to add plums, peaches and nectarines to your healthy food grocery list if you want to fight off obesity and obesity-related diseases. New research from Texas A & M AgriLife found that these stone fruits can potentially help to fight diabetes and cardiovascular disease, both of which are associated with obesity.
Fruits and Vegetables for Weight Loss
Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos states that the compounds that are found in these stone fruits could help to combat metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which obesity and inflammation lead to a multitude of other serious health conditions. He states that stone fruits contain phenolic compounds that have anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties and may also reduce the oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL) which is associated with cardiovascular disease. He states that these fruits are unique because the mixture of the bioactive compounds in the fruit works at the same time within different components of the disease – including obesity, inflammation, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Try This Healthy Food, Too
The stone fruits studied in the current research all contain a minimal amount of calories and are considered healthy food options. A plum contains about 30 calories. In addition to having minimal calories, plums also contain calcium, potassium, copper, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. All of these additional components make it a nutritious, healthy food. Another healthy food that this study mentions is a peach. A medium sized peach contains about 58 calories as well as calcium, niacin, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C and vitamin A. A medium sized nectarine contains approximately 62 calories as well as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K. In general, fruits and vegetables contain modest amounts of calories and can be consumed regularly as part of a healthy diet. In addition to minimal calories, fruits and vegetables also contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health. Instead of munching on chips and dip, try snacking on a variety of fruits and vegetables to satisfy your mid-day hunger.
Funding for the studies of health benefits of stone fruit are funded by the California Tree Fruit Agreement, The California Plum Board, the California Grape and Tree Fruit League and the Texas Department of Agriculture. This may raise concern for some readers, however, you should keep in mind that adding healthy food containing lots of fresh fruits and vegetables (which can include plums, peaches and nectarines) into your diet will help to satisfy your hunger with fewer calories than junk food, thereby helping to decrease your risk of obesity. Future, independent, research should look at whether the benefits of stone fruits found in this current study are reproduced in additional testing.

Top 10 diet mistakes that prevent women from losing weight

Don't Make Diet Mistakes
Do you feel like you are in an endless struggle to drop your dress size or squeeze into that sexy date night dress? Are you perplexed that your consistent diet and exercise efforts have yielded less than optimal results? You may think you are doing all the right things but it's possible that the diet and fitness protocol you are following is actually preventing you from reaching your goal weight and getting the body you want. Read on for the 10 most common diet mistakes that prevent women from losing weight.

1. Dieting Without Resistance Training

What is the most common way women approach weight loss? Crash dieting. If crash diets worked, all women would be healthy and fit.

There are two huge problems with crash dieting. One, a lot of the weight lost is muscle tissue. That means that even if you weigh less and fit into smaller sizes of clothing, you are still flabby.

The second problem is even worse. Dieting slows down your metabolism. The longer you diet and the less you eat, the slower your metabolism. Muscle is your body's metabolism - when you lose it, you reduce your metabolic capacity.
When you eventually get off the diet - and you will get off - you are bound to gain all the weight back in the form of fat. Worse, you will likely end up gaining more weight than you lost.
2. Focusing On The Scale

What do you see in the mirror and what does the world see at the beach? Do they see the way your body looks or the number that shows up on the scale? Most women focus on the number on the scale even though it isn't always representative of the way they really look.
If you exercise properly, you will build muscle and lose fat at the same time. If you lose five pounds of fat and build five pounds of muscle, the scale won't move, but you will look much better in the mirror and your clothes will fit much better because muscle is more dense and takes up less room than fat. The truth is, how you look and feel has little to do with how much you actually weigh.
3. Focusing On Cardio
When you do decide to do some form of exercise, is it invariably some form of cardio? Well, guess what? Cardio is the least important form of exercise for getting a sexy shapely body.
The key to getting and keeping a great body is to increase your metabolism. In other words, you need to focus on activities that not only burn calories during the workout, but also cause you to burn calories for hours and days after your workout. Doing metabolic resistance training and interval training are more effective than cardio-only exercise in boosting your metabolic rate.
4. Skipping Breakfast
You've heard it before. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But did anyone ever tell you why?
When you wake up in the morning, you have been fasting for eight or so hours. Your body is starving for nutrients. When you don't give it any, it starts breaking down muscle for energy. This is bad because your muscle is your metabolism. So you are literally destroying your body's ability to burn calories.
Studies have also shown that if you eat a balanced healthy breakfast, you are much less likely to overeat later in the day. And when you start your day with a healthy meal, you are more likely to make good nutrition choices from that point forward.
5. Relying on Pills
Diet pills are another common approach that women take to lose weight. There are many different categories of diet pills, but few to none of them actually work (read The Skinny on weight loss supplements). The only time you see women who have gotten in great shape thanks to a diet pill is on the advertisement for the diet pill. A natural, common sense approach is the most effective, safest, and longest-lasting strategy to losing weight.
6. Eating Too Little
Eating three square meals is just the bare minimum for a healthy and fit body. You should be eating three meals and at least two healthy snacks each day.
Most women eat too little. They skip or skimp on breakfast and then often do the same with lunch. This leaves you running on fumes all day. By the time dinner comes around, you are ravenous and likely to overeat.
You end up having your heaviest meal at the end of the day when there is little opportunity to burn off the calories. This is the perfect recipe for gaining fat.
7. Eating Out Too Much
If your busy schedule or desire for convenience has you eating out most of the time, you have little to no control over the foods you eat. And simply put, you have little to no control over what you look like and how you feel.
If you want to look and feel your best, you need to start cooking. This doesn't mean you spend hours cooking gourmet meals - it meals finding a delicious variety of recipes that you can put together in cinch. And before you eat out, learn about the common pitfalls of restaurant dining and how to avoid them.
8. Emotional Eating
Food can evoke both good and bad emotions and it is also a go-to when women feel anxious, depressed, angry, sad, or even elated. Women experience a variety of psychological attachments to different foods.
Sweets are often in this category. If you are like most women, all forms of sweets serve as comfort food. If you turn to food when you are stressed, you are letting your emotions control what your eat and how much you eat.
If you are going to get the body you deserve, you need to find a way to break this emotional attachment to food.
9. Lack of Consistency
Do you remember what happened last January? Wasn't this the year you were going to lose weight and get that sexy body?
Chances are, you were good for a short while. But then you started skipping workouts or breakfast, and by February, your New Year's resolutions were just a distant memory. Maybe you'll try again, but the same thing is likely to happen.
By now, you have learned that without consistency there will be no results. This means making resolutions and sticking to them.
10. Not Enough Sleep
Lack of sleep is an often overlooked factor. If you are doing everything right, but still can't lose the fat, take a look at your sleeping patterns.
Are you getting to bed at a reasonable hour? Do you sleep at least eight hours a night? Stress in and of itself compounded by too few hours of shut-eye result in an elevation of the stress hormone cortisol (check out Is stress making your belly fat?). Chronically high levels of cortisol can make losing fat very difficult and can even cause you to gain fat.
If you are dieting and exercising and still not seeing the body you want, make sure you aren't making one or more of these 10 common dieting mistakes. Commit to correcting one a week and you will get that sexy shape you deserve in no time.

Lose Belly Fat Without Sagging Skin

After you see the sagging skin on bellies of people who rapidly lost a bunch of weight, you may feel less motivated to lose pounds. It seems that you'd be trading one cosmetic issue for another. Some good news is that you don't have to worry about having the unwanted leftovers if you treat your skin well while you're still losing weight. Human skin is so elastic that, given time, it should be able to acclimate to your new size.
Step 1
Lose weight slowly. It's impressive when a person is able to ditch 100 lbs. within a few months, but skin isn't able to bounce back that quickly. Moreover, losing weight that quickly isn't healthy because it often involves self-starvation and overexertion. To stay safe and keep your skin on the same page as your weight loss, try not to lose more than a pound a week. A pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so you can safely ditch about 500 calories a day with no worries.
Step 2
Eat a skin-healthy diet. This should be easy for you as you are probably already planning to revamp your diet to lose weight. Many weight loss-friendly foods happen to contain skin-improving nutrients. The vitamin C in carrots, antioxidants in prunes and blueberries, and omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseeds and salmon will all help you keep your skin young and elastic.
Step 3
Do resistance training with your cardio to build muscle under your skin. Having more lean muscle will help you lose weight and offer your body a little under-skin bulk to replace some of the fat. Especially focus on doing exercises like as planks, and participate in yoga or Pilates in order to strengthen your stabilizing core muscles (these include your abs).
Step 4
Do a daily self skin care treatment. Exfoliate your skin with a loofah when you are in the shower to slough off dead skin cells and help the new, young skin regenerate more quickly. After your shower, generously massage into your skin a daily dose of moisturizer. You may notice improved skin tone if you use one that contains a skin elasticity-improving agent such as coenzyme q10. When you massage your skin, use kneading and stroking motions to enhance flow of lymph and blood.
Step 5
Stay hydrated. Since the majority of your body is comprised of water, it's a no-brainer that you should consistently replace the water you lose through sweat and urine. Water helps plump up your skin cells to keep your skin looking young and adaptable. Drink about eight glasses of water every day to avoid dehydration.

5 Things You Can Do To Tighten Up After Dropping Extra Pounds

Extra folds of skin can occur when you lose a lot of weight, lose it very quickly or if you’re a little bit older. With time, however, you can diminish the appearance of these folds if you take the following five steps.
1) Keep your muscles firm and more defined with diligent strength training.
2) Dry brush your skin twice a day to improve circulation. This tightens and brightens the skin by assisting the lymphatic system in ridding your body of metabolic waste just below the surface.
3) Consider using a sauna to work up a profuse sweat that will further cleanse your body of toxins and improve skin’s appearance. Infrared saunas penetrate especially deeply.
4) Drink eight to 10 glasses of clean, pure water daily from a glass or stainless steel container. Avoiding the phalates found in plastic means fewer contaminants in your system, resulting in smoother, tighter skin.
5) Use moisturizer and an organic self-tanner to make excess skin appear less noticeable. Give yourself a full year using these tips. Ultimately, some people do opt for surgery if they’re still unhappy about extra skin. I would suggest you get to your desired body weight and try reminding yourself how much healthier you are now without the excess fat — even if your skin isn’t a perfect fit.

The Most Common Mistakes About Flat Stomach Exercises

Woman abs

Flat belly and firm abdominal muscles are many people’s desire. Your misconceptions about exercises can make it dificult for your success. Let’s see which mistakes are most often made in good faith that you will carve your abdominal muscles.

1 daily exercise
Even abdominal muscles need rest, and for a long-term success you do not need to practice every single day without a break. Regular and consistent exercise three to five times a week will be enough.

2.  good training takes half an hour
If you need half an hour to harden your abdominal muscles, then you are doing something wrong. With enough condition and proper exercise, all your abdominal muscles will need is five minutes of intense workout.

3.  slow exercises are more effective
While it is important to do the exercise correctly, this does not mean that you need to work crunches very slowly. It is sufficient to raise the upper torso for about three seconds and just as much time to lower it to the ground. With to slow exercises you will destroy all the effort and you will not be satisfied with the results.

4 abdominal exercises at the end of workout
At the end of training you have already run out of energy, the body is more heated, so the effect is not what you would expect. The best time to do crunches is after cardio workout or warm-up.

5 with Pilates you can not reach flat belly
Men are of the opinion that the practice of Pilates is only for girls and their abdominal muscles after such exercise will not stand out so beautifully. This is far from the truth! Pilates strengthens the body and proper diet and cardio exercise will lead to desired appearance. Keep in mind that abdominal muscles are also influenced by genes and not only by the amount of effort you invest in.

6.  no solid muscles without weights
You do not need weights to strengthen and emphasize abs. Stay on the ground – it is cheaper, just as effective and available everywhere.

The Best Diet Breakfasts

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day when it comes to dieting. A healthy, satisfying breakfast can help to prevent mid-morning or lunchtime binges. Breakfast also helps rev your metabolism and provides energy for morning activity. In the ongoing research study of more than 5,000 people who have lost and maintained an average weight loss of 66 lbs. known as the National Weight Control Registry, 78 percent of the participants report eating breakfast daily as an essential strategy in their success. The best kinds of breakfasts are low in sodium, sugar and saturated and trans fats.

Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a quick, hearty morning option. Choose steel cut or old-fashioned versions over instant packages that are often sweetened with manufacturer-added sugars. It is high in fiber to help you feel full, and low in calories. It also can serve as a vehicle for other nutrients---such as antioxidants in berries, calcium and protein in low-fat milk and omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts. A drizzle of honey or molasses can add sweetness, if you need it. A serving of steel-cut oatmeal cooked with 1/2 cup skim milk, 2 tablespoons walnuts, and 1 tablespoon molasses equals 334 calories.

Ready-to-Eat Cereal

A bowl of ready-to-eat cereal and low-fat milk makes an easy and perfect diet food. Researchers from Provident Clinical Research in Illinois reported in a February 2010 issue of the "Journal of the American Dietetic Association" that participants who ate two servings of a ready-to-eat oat cereal daily as part of a low calorie diet for 12 weeks experienced improvements in cholesterol levels and waist size greater than participants eating the same portions of low fiber foods. Choose a cereal high in fiber and low in added sugars containing about 150 calories per serving to support your diet. Have it with fat-free milk and fresh fruit.

Eggs

Eggs are not a dieter's enemy. In fact, an egg breakfast enhances weight loss as suggested by the title of a study performed at St. Louis University and published in the "International Journal of Obesity" October 2008. When participants were fed a bagel breakfast or an egg breakfast containing identical calories, the egg group experienced a 61 percent greater reduction in body mass index, a 16 percent greater reduction in body fat and a 34 percent greater reduction in waist circumference after just eight weeks. Go for two eggs scrambled with a few egg whites for about 200 calories. Add a slice of whole wheat toast for another 100 calories.

Protein-Rich

Eat a serving of protein with your breakfast to enhance weight loss. "The International Journal of Obesity" in July 2010 published a study demonstrating that a breakfast rich in protein helped to reduce participants' appetites and overall daily calorie intake. Choose proteins low in saturated fat to minimize calorie intake and negative health effects. "Ladies Home Journal" suggests a smoked salmon sandwich composed of a whole grain bagel with a 2 oz serving of smoked salmon, two tablespoons low-fat cream cheese and two tomato slices to total 321 calories and 21g of protein. Low-fat cottage cheese mixed with chopped apple or non-fat Greek yogurt with blueberries and a drizzle of agave nectar are other high protein options. Low-sodium turkey bacon or ground turkey "sausage" made with extra lean meat, fennel seeds, oregano and garlic can be eaten alongside a bowl of oatmeal.

Directions for the Master Cleanse Lemonade Diet

Stanley Burroughs created the Master Cleanse fast and promoted it with the release of his 1941 book "The Master Cleanser." The book promotes a detoxification fast that consists of drinking a mixture of organic lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for 10 days. Burroughs claimed that the fast would help you shed pounds and detoxify your body of toxins. The Master Cleanse is an alternative diet, and you should always consult your doctor before making changes to your diet.
Step 1
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid processed food and meats three days before the cleanse. Eating raw foods will help you ease into the intensive cleanse.

Step 2
Prepare the mixture on the first day of the cleanse. Add 2 tbsp. of organic lemon juice to 8 oz. of water. Add 2 tbsp. of maple syrup and 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper. Prepare a serving of the mixture each time that you are hungry and drink through the day. Do not eat any solid food.
Step 3
Drink an herbal laxative tea each night to promote bowel movements. Health food stores often carry herbal laxative teas made from senna. Follow the directions on your particular brand of tea.
Step 4
Continue the Master Cleanse for 10 full days. Refrain from strenuous activity. Drink as much water as you desire while on the cleanse.
Step 5
Break the cleanse by slowly eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for three days. Continue to avoid processed foods and meat. Slowly add other foods after the third day.

What Exercise Burns the Most Fat on the Face and Chin?

There are no exercises that specifically burn fat on your face. When you do cardiovascular activity, you will burn fat all over your body. Where you notice it first depends on your genetic make-up and the places your body is programmed to lose and gain weight from. However, some exercises will generally help you burn more calories than others.

Running
According to Rick Morris on the Running Planet website, running burns about twice as many calories as its lower-impact counterpart, walking. This means that you are likely to see the results of a running exercise regimen twice as fast. The other benefit of running for weight loss is that it makes your muscles work hard, which means they quickly develop in strength. Muscles generally use up more calories to function than fat. So, the stronger your muscles are, the more calories they burn – even when you’re not working out.
Evening Exercise
It’s a popular theory that working out first thing in the morning burns more fat because your body has fewer glycogen stores to draw on for energy. However, according to Paul Kendall on the "Daily Mail" website, new research shows this is not necessarily the case. Studies at the Clinical Research Center of the University of Chicago indicate that your body’s metabolism and fitness levels respond better to high-impact – that is, fat-burning – exercise in the evening. However, if you are a morning person, you will still see results of a workout first thing -- it's more important to choose a time that you will stick to long term.

Weight Training
Because bigger muscles burn more calories, it makes sense that strength training can help you burn fat. According to James Chan on BodyBuilding.com, a weights session increases your metabolism for up to 38 hours after you finish the workout, which means you’re still burning calories that whole time. For best results, he suggests using moderate rather than heavy weights and doing a higher number of repetitions.

Exercises You Enjoy
In order for your body to start burning fat instead of glycogen, or carbohydrates, you need to exercise aerobically for at least 30 minutes. To increase your chances of completing half-hour sessions several times a week, choose activities you enjoy doing. According to the ShapeFit website, there are plenty of efficient fat-burning workouts, so you don’t have to limit yourself to just one type of exercise – even within the same session. For example, you could do 15 minutes of running followed by 15 minutes on the rowing machine or stationary bike. Skipping and swimming are also ways to burn a lot of fat.

Learn about crash diet Now – Useful!

There are more and more people who want to have a successful dieting experience in recent years. Thus, many terms related to dieting are developed. One of the terms that you might have known would be crash diet. This is one of the ideas about dieting and it is usually regarded as extreme dieting.

Crash diet is something widely used by some celebrities in recent years. They need to ensure that they have the slim body.
According to many of the medical experts, there are a lot of reasons why people would like to take the crash diet. One of the obvious reasons is that the result can be shown very obviously and the result in weight loss can be quite significant. For example, some people can lose around 10 pounds of weights within 3 days after they have conducted the crash diet.

The idea behind crash diet is that people would limit their intake of calories. Through this type of reduced intake, people would find that the body would have a reduced weight provided that the activities that they do in the normal day would remain unchanged. When you take food, you would take energy and when you do exercises, you would consume energy. Therefore, the purpose of restricted intake of food is to make sure that the body would burn your excessive energy stored in your body, which is usually in the form of fats. Then, you would succeed in reducing your body weight.

However, it is not advised that people should have a prolonged crash diet without a rest. The meaning of ‘rest’ is that people should try to gradually restore the normal intake of food after they have conducted crash diet for a certain period of time. It is because the prolonged crash diet would cause nutrition deficiencies if people cannot manage the dieting well. Therefore, they are always advised to restore the dieting habit gradually after they have obtained a steady result of weight loss from crash diet.

If you wish to reduce the chance of developing nutrient deficiencies, you should try to pick some of the foods which would keep you healthy in that way. For instance, you should keep eating some fruits every day such that you can get the sufficient level of vitamins and minerals. Vegetables are also welcomed for people who are taking the crash diet but they have to make sure that the vegetables are cooked in a healthy way. In other words, they should not be the fried ones or the cooking oil would already bring you a large amount of fats.

To conclude, using a crash diet can really help people reduce the energy intake in body and therefore have a better weight loss effect. However, it should be done in a cautious manner and you should report any kind of strange health problems to your doctors when you spot any. Otherwise, it can be quite difficult for you to restore your health once you develop some troublesome nutrients deficiencies.

Celebrity diet secrets

Celebs - we want to look like them, dress like them, even smell like them - and now we can eat like them too. After all, if you can't be famous, there's no reason you can't act famous instead...

If (like us) your celebrity obsession reaches to wondering about the contents of their fridges and what they really eat to stay looking trim, then you're not alone.
Thanks to Beyonce and Jennifer Aniston we're all guilty of contemplating bottles of maple syrup and jars of babyfood at Tesco - and there's nothing like a celebrity aside to spark a worldwide wave of fad dieting.
As much as we pretend not to give a hoot about celebrity diets (as we tuck into another bar of choc) we are inwardly curious.
What do they really eat? Do they eat anything at all? And are celebrity diets easy to stick to?
We've rounded up some of our fave A listers and found out which diets they're doing. Plus we've enlisted the help of nutritionist Dr Aubry to find out how more about celebrity diet secrets...

Scarlett Johansson's low-calorie diet

Scarlett Johansson is famed for her curves but the star lost a few pounds to squeeze into a leather catsuit for her role in Iron Man 2.

Miss Johansson denies loosing silly amounts of weight but admitted to going on a low-calorie diet based on white meat, vegetables and regular work outs.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "A low-calorie diet guarantees weight loss without the risk of putting weight back on afterwards. The advantage of this diet is that it allows the dieter to adopt a healthy attitude towards food for years to come.
Risks: "For a time, low-calorie diets can make the dieter feel famished."
Top tip to pinch from Scarlett: Fruits, vegetables and starchy foods... these form the basis of a healthy diet, for losing weight without the risk of deficiencies. Don't forget to retain a bit of fat in your diet... the body needs fatty acids. Glowing skin and hair depend on it!
Best not waste those biscuits then..

Rihanna's Atkins diet
Rihanna has the type of womanly curves we dream of, teamed with a toned body that almost puts us off the gym - but her gorgeous bod' is also down to eating well.
In the past Rihanna has tried the famous (but controversial) Atkins diet.
Basically Atkins equals zero carbs but there are no restrictions on fats. In a word, a diet that's guaranteed to be very rich in cholesterol.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "The Atkins diet is completely unbalanced and very dangerous, even though it's been reborn in recent years under the name "Low Carb" diet - it actually eliminates carbohydrates, meaning that fruits can't be consumed and yet fats can. Not good."
Risks: "With the Atkins diet there is a distinct lack of vitamins and it's disastrous for cholesterol levels."
Top tip to pinch from Rihanna: This diet is to be avoided at all costs. If you want a body like Rihanna then head to the gym instead. No short cuts here. Boo.

Kirsten Dunst celebrity diet: the alkaline diet

Kirsten Dunst's alkaline diet

It's difficult to believe that Kirsten needs to go on a diet... But with exercise not really being her thing, Kirsten has tried the alkaline diet.
This is pretty popular in celebville. There's no need to dig out your chemistry schoolbooks though, this regime consists of rebalancing the diet (which is often too rich in acidic products like processed food, red meat, chocolate, etc) and prioritising alkaline foods (fruit, vegetables, green tea).

This not only helps to lose weight but can also boost skin's radiance.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "It's an original diet but completely acceptable from a nutritional point of view. More than a pure weight loss plan, it's above all a rebalancing diet that has everything to ensure good health."
Risks: "It's not dangerous at all because it doesn't cut out any category of foods. Everything being a question of balance, there's no risk of deficiencies."
Top tip to pinch from Kirsten: This diet is popular with a number of celebs because it allows them to adopt a healthy attitude towards food. Plus it sounds pretty cool.
Gisele is a fan of Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox.
This incredible diet promises weight loss of 21 pounds in 21 days (around 10kg) - although we're not sure Gisele has ever had that much to lose!
This is essentially a liquid detox where you can drink vegetable stock, herbal teas and a few fruit juices.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "A detox can do a lot of good. But be careful, it's a question of duration. This one is for far too long! It should last 2 days absolute maximum, although 1 day is even better.
"Over a short period of time, it's not too unbalanced: vegetable stock provides trace elements while fruit juice provides sugar, and all of it will purify the body. We have a tendency to overeat these days, so an occasional detox can be really beneficial."
Risks: "The main risk is fatigue. It's very important to avoid any exercise on the day you do this detox so that you can rest. Also limit the amount of liquid ingested to 2 litres max a day so you don't put strain on your kidneys."
Top tip to pinch from Gisele: Go ahead and detox but limit it to one day a week only.
Kate Hudson's high protein diet
For Kate Hudson, the problem of post-pregnancy weight was quickly dealt with. Following her last pregnancy she lost 27kg in... 4 months! Of course giving birth may have helped...
She also benefited from a high protein diet and regular exercise.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "High protein diets are very effective when they're carefully followed. They don't allow for any bending of the rules, not even the slightest, seemingly harmless infringement. A single tomato can ruin results."
Risks: "It can be very dangerous in the event of heart or kidney failure. But generally speaking, it's a diet that shouldn't be followed for more than two weeks."
"If you've just had a baby the body is trying to re-establish a balance and avoid deficiencies, so this diet isn't ideal for sensible post baby weight loss."
Top tip to pinch from Kate: Because the weight loss is so spectacular in the short term, high protein diets are ideal for anyone who has decided to take themself in hand and wants a good, quick result. It's a good starting point, but take care throughout the stabilisation phase.

Madonna's macrobiotic diet
Madonna is proud to show off her sculpted figure which she has worked hard for over the years, and in terms of her diet she's just as strict, opting for a macrobiotic diet.
It's a predominantly vegetarian diet that's based on the principles of yin and yang. Expect lots of whole grains with vegetables and legumes. Too strict? Not for Madonna.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "The macrobiotic diet is a very zen, philosophical attitude towards food, and can help keep weight consistent.
Risks: "I would say that there aren't any. It's a 100% healthy diet that's based on healthy foods for the body, mostly cereals and vegetables.
Top tip to pinch from Madonna: The idea of a stabilising diet over the long term is good. By cutting out meat and limiting the amount of fatty foods, this type of diet will inevitably have a slimming effect. There's no secret, the winning trio is cereals, fruits and vegetables.

Megan Fox's vinegar detox diet
Megan Fox looks incredible in lingerie ads for Armani, but (irritatingly) she freely admits to avoiding the gym and eating her fave foods as she pleases.
Apparently her secret lies in a cocktail of water and apple cider vinegar that she sips every morning for its cleansing, slimming and complexion-improving properties.
Ok so it's hardly mouthwatering, but if it works, we could be convinced, right?
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says:"Unfortunately, cider vinegar doesn't have any particular slimming properties. So if that does her any good, it's only because she believes that it does.
Risks: "She isn't really risking a lot apart from the very acidic nature of the vinegar that might lead to stomachache after a while."
Top tip to pinch from Megan: Ditch the vinegar and instead opt for lemon juice in a glass of warm water in the morning. It's really cleansing for the liver.

Natalie Portman's vegetarian diet
Natalie Portman owes her slim figure to her convictions. A hard-line vegetarian, she likes "to eat things that have not been killed."
She even became a vegan in 2009 in reaction to the scandals involving American industrial food production.
Nutritionist Dr Aubry says: "A vegetarian diet isn't unbalanced. We don't need meat, just as long as our diet is varied.
"A vegan diet, on the other hand, seems too restrictive to me: I'd prefer to keep dairy for calcium. It's very important."
Risks: "Whilst people can survive without meat, they must nevertheless remember that it's the main source of iron in the diet and it can't be found in the same proportions in vegetables.
Those following a vegetarian diet should therefore consider taking iron supplements from time to time."
Top tip to pinch from Natalie: Vegetarians can have some delicious, balanced and creative dishes based on whole grains and vegetables. There's no need to eat meat!
